Malaria in Italy
Malaria was once a major health problem in Italy, particularly in the southern regions and areas with marshlands. The disease was spread by insects that bred in stagnant water, and it affected millions of Italians over the centuries.
The name "malaria" itself comes from Italian, meaning "bad air" - people originally believed the disease was caused by the unclean air from swamps rather than by insects. This misconception persisted for centuries until scientists discovered the true cause.
